It is with much sadness that Arbroath Golf Course Management Committee and Staff learned of the death of Mr Rich Cargill, "The Legend". on April 8, 2007 after a brave battle against cancer.
Rich first became a member of Arbroath Artisan Golf Club & Arbroath Golf Course in 1950 and it wasn't long after that that he won his first Junior Club Championship, but that was just the start of what was to become a long and illustrious amateur golfing career. Rich won the Club Championship no fewer than 9 times, he won the Links Championship on 13 occasions spanning 5 different decades, has last being in 1991. Rich had also been Angus County Match play Champion on 3 occasions. He had also won numerous Open competitions and match play events throughout Angus and indeed the British Isles. Rich has also appeared in no less than 3 British Open's
All of these achievements combined with the fact that he was a true gentleman both on and off the golf course has meant that Rich had been a role model and inspiration for many golfers. Rich also spent much of his free time coaching Arbroath's junior members both on and off the course and was always willing to offer advice and guidance to anyone who asked.
As Indicated earlier Rich was a true gentleman when it came to the game he loved, and if you were fortunate to be at the first tee when Rich appeared with a space in his party he would always invite you to join them, no matter what your golfing ability may be. And you could be sure that throughout your round he would always be willing to offer you the odd tip to improve your own game. The offer of playing golf with Rich was not one that you should let pass by.
The other beauty about playing golf with the legend was reaching the 19th hole as this is where a few hours could pass in a matter of moments if the conversation turned to Rich's golfing past. He always had the ability to tell a humorous story about the people he had met and played with while playing the sport he loved and made to look very easy,
Rich is survived by his wife Jean and members of their extended family, most of whom are all keen golfers and can often be found on Arbroath Golf Course where Rich spent many happy hours of his life from his childhood until shortly before his death.
