Course Guide

Elliot Golf Course, on the card, looks an easy course to play but with the wind blowing can be very challenging.    I will now try and guide you round the course.

The score card below is the original score care from when the course was designed by James Baird in 1901.

Original Score Card

There are 72 bunkers and undulating greens.

1st Hole (Par 4)

A drive to the right of the fairway bunker gives you a medium iron to the green.

2nd Hole (Par 5)

Out of bounds down the right a long drive is required slightly left of centre.  Then a big carry is needed to clear the ridge which runs from the burn to 12 yards short of the green.

3rd Hole (Par 4)

One of the most difficult par 4s on the course.   The tee shot should be hit to the left of the white field post.  It then needs a very accurate second shot to a well bunkered green.

4th Hole (Par 3)

A testing short hole to a well bunkered green.   Also a burn lurks in the front and runs along the right hand side of the green.

5th Hole (Par 4)

A straight drive is required here as there are 3 bunkers eating out to the middle of the fairway – out of bounds down the right.   A burn has to be crossed with the second shot to the green.

6th Hole (Par 4)

The drive has to be kept left over the big hill to make the second shot easier to the green.

7th Hole (Par 3)

A straight forward shot into a bowl shaped green.   Missing this green makes for a very difficult up and down.

8th Hole (Par 4)

The hidden fairway bunkers at 235 yards must be avoided so the drive has to be hit right of centre.   From there a mid to short iron takes you to the green which has a ridge from front to back.

9th Hole (Par 4)

Once again off the tee 3 hidden bunkers are there to catch the unwary.    There is a burn to cross to reach the green which is slightly faster than the rest.

10th Hole (Par 4)

The drive has to be left of the bunker on the fairway with deep rough down the left.   Once again a burn has to be crossed to reach a very undulating green.

11th Hole (Par 4)

2 bunkers lie in wait for the wayward tee shot, so an accurate drive gives one an easy pitch over the bunker which guards the green.

12th Hole (Par 4)

One of the easier holes only if you avoid the greenside bunkers.  The drive must be kept left of centre making it easier to get into the green.

13th Hole (Par 4)

In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult holes on the course.   Out of bounds down the right and a burn crossing the fairway, which depending on conditions one has to consider.   The second shot to a plateau green has to be treated with care.

14th Hole (Par 3)

At 235 I consider this to be one of the most difficult holes in Scotland.  The entrance to the green is about 10 yards with bunkers left and right.   Once again a burn lurks behind the green.

15th Hole (Par 4)

A straightforward drive over the marker to the left side of the fairway gives one an easy second into the green.

16th Hole (Par 3)

A very difficult short hole – the secret is that to be short as there are 5 bunkers surrounding the green.

17th Hole (Par 5)

A burns runs over the centre of the fairway. The burn cannot be reached from the tee.   This is a hole which needs a big tee-shot.   The second shot should be played over the left hand bunker as the terrain slopes left to right.

18th Hole (Par 4)

A straightforward drive down the right side of fairway to make the second shot easier as the green slopes left to right – out of bounds at the back of the green.
